What Printers can I use?

There are a number of different ways to print from DirectOffice™ Mobile Print:

Print via Wi-Fi to networked printers

This is the most common method of printing from DirectOffice™ Mobile Print. The target printer needs to support one of the following printer languages:

  • PostScript® Page Description Language (PDL).

  • PCL6 Page Description Language (PDL).

  • Epson® inkjet printers that support the ESC/P-R® language.

  • HP inkjet printers that support the PCL3GUI language using mode 10 compression.

  • Canon® Inkjet printers that support the IVEC language (PIXMA/PIXUS).

Many laser and inkjet printers support these languages. The printer needs to be networked and accessible by Wi-Fi. This can either be an Ethernet network with a Wi-Fi access point, or it can be a printer that is directly connected to a Wi-Fi network. The DirectOffice™ Mobile Print mobile device needs to be connected to the appropriate Wi-Fi access point. DirectOffice™ Mobile Print will automatically detect if a printer is compatible or not by retrieving configuration information from the printer.

Print to a printer connected via USB

DirectOffice™ Mobile Print can print to printers connected directly to the device's USB port. Connect your printer to the device using a USB cable and DirectOffice™ Mobile Print will add the printer to the list of available printers if it is supported. The same printer languages are supported as for Wi-Fi connected printers.

Print via DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host

DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host is a Windows based PC utility that can increase the types of printer available to DirectOffice™ Mobile Print and can enable a wider range of content to be printed. Because DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host uses the applications and printer drivers installed on the PC, it is able to print to any type of printer and any type of content supported by an appropriate application on the PC (including spreadsheets and presentations).

Do I need to use a PC to print using DirectOffice™ Mobile Print?

No. DirectOffice™ Mobile Print supports direct Wi-Fi printing to networked PostScript printers, PCL6 printers, HP, Epson & Canon inkjet printers. The DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Windows PC utility provides additional flexibility and increases the coverage of printers available to DirectOffice™ Mobile Print, allowing printing of all types of content to all types of printer.

Do I need printer drivers for my printer?

No. DirectOffice™ Mobile Print configures itself to support direct printing to PostScript printers, PCL6 printers, HP, Epson & Canon inkjet printers.

Do I need to have Wi-Fi switched on to print?

Yes if you want to print to a networked printer. DirectOffice™ Mobile Print uses Wi-Fi to connect with the networks that support printers.

Wi-Fi does not need to be switched on for USB printing.

Can I print to inkjet printers?

DirectOffice™ Mobile Print will support most HP, Epson and Canon inkjet printers and any Inkjet printers that support PostScript or PCL.

Other types of inkjet printers can be used with the DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host Windows PC utility. The inkjet printer will need to be connected to the PC that is running DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host and the PC will need to have the appropriate drivers installed for the printer.

Can I print using USB?

Yes. USB printing is supported by DirectOffice™ Mobile Print.

How does my printer need to be connected?

To print directly from your mobile device to a PostScript, PCL6, HP inkjet, Epson inkjet or Canon inkjet the printer needs to be on a network that has a Wi-Fi access point. This could be an Ethernet network of printers that has a Wi-Fi access point or it could be a Wi-Fi network that has printers connected.

To access printers using DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host Windows PC utility, the host PC must be accessible over Wi-Fi from the mobile device and the printer needs to be connected to the host PC.

DirectOffice™ Mobile Print says my printer is incompatible. Why is this?

There are a number of potential reasons, but the most likely reason is that the printer is not a PostScript, PCL6, HP inkjet, Epson inkjet or Canon inkjet printer. In some cases DirectOffice™ Mobile Print may offer the opportunity to print a test page to verify your printer compatibility. You should try using the DirectOffice™ Mobile Print Print By PC Host PC utility as an alternative way of accessing an unsupported printer.

Can I print to a remote printer over 3G or the internet?

Currently this is not supported. It will be available in a future version of DirectOffice™ Mobile Print.

How do I select the printer I want to use?

If a printer has been previously discovered and saved in My Printers, it can be selected from the My Printers list of the Printer Settings screen. If the printer is not saved as a favourite, it can be discovered using the Add printers button on the Printer Settings printers screen.

DirectOffice™ Mobile Print is asking me for a Password and Credentials. What does this mean?

Access to some networks or services require log on Credentials and Passwords for security reasons. Typically these Credentials are User Name, Password and Domain Name.

Can I save my login credentials for a specific printer for later use?

If DirectOffice™ Mobile Print requires credentials to access any network or service, these credentials can be saved and will not be required the next time the network or service is accessed. The user has the option to save their password. If the password is saved it will not be requested again. If the password is not saved it will need to be entered each time the network or service is accesses.
